President Donald Trump Pardons Sherriff Joe Arpaio

Surprisingly, President Donald Trump pardoned Sherriff Joe Arpaio last month. To make matters worse, Judge Susan Bolt validated President Trump’s pardon of Sherriff Joe Arpaio. This came in a few months after Joe Arpaio’s conviction. Citizens who have been campaigning for Joe Arpaio’s detention were not happy with this news.

Background Look

Sherriff Joe Arpaio was convicted in July 2007. He was convicted because he stemmed a federal judge’s order. Arpaio ignored the order to appear in court for racial-profiling. President Trump’s pardon comes a few weeks into Arpaio’s scheduled sentence.

Judge Susan Bolton’s Ruling

Judge Susan Bolton’s ruling marks and end to the latest chapter in Joe Arpaio’s controversial career, which has been ongoing for about ten years. The chapters include the arrest of Lacey and Larkin, co-owners of Phoenix New Times. With Lacey’s guidance, the duo covered Sherriff Joe Arpaio’s controversial leadership in correctional facilities. Their articles exposed his scandalous stewardship for the 24 years he served at the Maricopa Jail. A decade into his release, Lacey shared his sentiments on Arpaio’s case.

Lacey’s Sentiments

Lacey said that Trump’s pardon of Joe Arpaio reflects the depth of corruption in his government. Given that Sherriff Joe Arpaio openly advertised racism and torture in correctional facilities, he did not deserve to be pardoned. Lacey added that Sherriff Joe Arpaio had a hand in parading corpses as well as mutilated bodies in his reign at Maricopa County Jail.

Reasons for Conviction

From brutal jail conditions to torturous living environments in jail, Joe Arpaio is lucky to have been pardoned. Even so, most citizens rushed to the streets to riot over the unfair release of America’s most scandalous sheriff. In Lacey’s words, this is a sheriff who has corrupted the jail system by harassing Latinos. He promoted inmate suicides and watched his deputies support unfair treatment. The Arrest

Lacey and Larkin are well aware of Joe Arpaio’s sins. They had first-hand experience of his wrath when he arrested them in October 2017. On that night, Jim Larkin was in his home when a group of men appeared in black USV’s. The men shone flashlights shouting ‘You know what we want!’. Larkin recalled the series of events where they begged the police officers to release them. Their pleas fell on deaf ears on the night.

Additional Information

The duo was arraigned in court thereafter. Surprisingly, they were declared innocent after a riot from their fans. A settlement of $3.7 million was issued in the hearing. Lacey and Larkin used the settlement cash to establish the Frontera Fund. This charity organization has improved immigrants lives by supporting their stay in Arizona.

Until now, the duo has supported many charitable causes with the hope of improving safety in the society. Lacey and Larkin are on the frontline of fighting for the less fortunate including inmates who experience inhumane treatment.

As Sherriff Joe Arpaio’s case settles, Lacey and Larkin are focused on promoting peace and a reliable justice system for the people of Arizona. They will support their people by whistleblowing on every scandalous case.

  1. Presidential pardons like this will have to be really used the right way and there should be panels to decide if this should be granted. Just as has been under some scrutiny in the justice system, I believe that there should be panels of inquiry as the case may be. The case of unlawful incarceration should not be taken lightly if there should be care to let people do more good in the society.
